Sentebale was born through the recognition that small community projects, with the right support, can make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of Lesotho’s orphans and vulnerable children. Whether it’s our own flagship programs such as the 'Mamohato Camps, or assisting established local groups, American Friends of Sentebale constantly works to improve the lives of vulnerable children in Lesotho.
The situation in Lesotho is very serious with poverty and the HIV/AIDS virus taking its toll - around 3% of the population is dying every year and life expectancy is just 35 years. Of the 1.8m people of Lesotho it is estimated that approximately 400,000 children are orphans. The challenge we face is to ensure that these orphans and vulnerable children grow up educated and empowered to build a better future for themselves. This is where Sentebale is looking to make a real impact – we aim to give those who want a leg up the right support to lift them out of this terrible poverty trap. The passion and hands-on enthusiasm of Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, is at the heart of Sentebale’s ethos and work ethic. The charity strives to use innovative methods and strategies to achieve visible results throughout Lesotho.
